Elaine moved to California right after WWII. She came from Nebraska where she was born and raised, and her move to Southern California occurred after her husband – who had served in the Pacific Rim – was stationed there when the war ended. She and her husband bought a home in 1952 and raised a son and daughter. Elaine and her husband had been married for almost 60 years when he passed in 2009.
Six years ago, the neurological disorder from which she’d suffered for many years grew worse. In early 2016, it required brief hospitalization followed by several months of rehab. Sadly, it was clear at this point that Elaine could not return to her home of 65 years and she as placed in a board‐and‐care. She receives good care but is completely isolated and unable to get out. Extended family lives in Nebraska and Northern California. Her son died 3 years ago, and her daughter (who lives in Honduras) is rarely able to afford a trip home. An iPad Air would “open the world” to Elaine by allowing her to download her hometown newspaper, correspond with friends by email, subscribe to Facebook, send/receive pictures from her daughter.
